The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) is a ground based gamma-ray astronomy experiment comprised of an array of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). Very High Energy (VHE >50GeV) astrophysical gamma-rays interact with the Earth’s atmosphere, generating showers of high energy particles which emit Cherenkov radiation. Detection of this light enables the direction of origin of the gamma-rays and hence the astronomical source to be resolved. The original H.E.S.S. array of four IACTs with 100m2 mirror area was enhanced in 2012 by the addition of a fifth telescope with 600m2 mirror area, thereby improving the low energy sensitivity. The extended energy range of the five telescope array (H.E.S.S. II) helps bridge the gap between ground and satellite based experiments and aids in furthering our understanding of astrophysical acceleration processes. Robust calibration methods help to improve the accuracy and reliability of data obtained. Cross-calibration tools are being developed for calibration between telescopes of differing sizes, the functioning of which is demonstrated on some early H.E.S.S. II data. Calibration methods such as these will also be especially important for the Cherenkov Telescope Array, the planned successor to the current generation of IACT arrays, where the use of three telescope sizes is foreseen.
