A general search for new phenomena with the ATLAS detector in pp collisions at √s = 8 TeV - Statistical Interpretation — •Simone Amoroso and Fabio Cardillo — Albert Ludwigs Universität Freiburg
The operation of the Large Hadron Collider provides many opportunities to investigate physical phenomena at the TeV scale, and limits have ben put on many theories predicting the occurrence of new physics in this energy range. Although these searches cover already a wide variety of possible event topologies, they do not explore them all. Events caused by new interactions or new particles might still be hidden in the LHC data.
The approach presented helps to address this important issue with a model-independent search strategy. Event topologies involving isolated electrons, photons and muons, as well as jets, jets identified as originating from b-quarks (b-jets) and missing transverse momentum are investigated. The events are subdivided according to their final states into exclusive analysis channels. For each channel, an algorithm search for deviations in data against the Monte Carlo simulated background in three kinematic variables sensitive to new physics effects. To quantify the probability for such a deviation to appear in any of the final states considered, the distribution of the p-values of the observed deviations is compared to an expectation obtained from pseudo experiments, including correlations among the uncertainties.
