Soft electron B-tagger for Z+b cross section measurement with the ATLAS detector — •Rohin Narayan, Tatsiana Klimkovich, and Andre Schoening — Physikalisches Institut Universität Heidelberg
The associated production of Z-bosons with b-quarks is an important Standard Model process which is sensitive to the gluon density of the proton. The process is also a background for other Standard Model processes as well as searches for New Physics.
The conventional method in measuring the cross section involves b-jet tagging to identify events. However this introduces jet energy scale uncertainties. Our method uses multivariate techniques with calorimeter as well as inner detector information associated with the low transverse momentum, soft electrons ( as low as 5 GeV ) coming from the semi-leptonic decay of B-hadrons to tag the events.
We present the results of the development of a multivariate soft electron tagger and its validation in data using a tag and probe method with J/ψ sample.
