Estimation of W+jets background in the ATLAS H → WW → l ν l ν analysis using a likelihood-based matrix technique — •Phuong Nguyen Dang, Karsten Köneke, and Karl Jakobs — Institute of Physics, University of Freiburg
One of the most challenging backgrounds in the H → WW → l ν l ν analysis is W+jets. It has very similar size and distribution in the final observable as the Higgs boson signal. A data-driven method, called the fake-factor method, has been applied in order to estimate this important background. However, this method has large systematic uncertainties stemming from extrapolations from data control regions to the signal region. In this talk, a new likelihood-based matrix method is proposed to estimate the W+jets background from data. This method is utilising lepton identification criteria directly in the di-lepton data sample and thus reduces the systematic uncertainty stemming from the control sample composition and extrapolation to the signal region.
