Chip Development in 65nm CMOS Technology for the High Luminosity Upgrade of the ATLAS Pixel Detector — Leonard Germic, Miroslav Havránek, Tomasz Hemperek, Tetsuichi Kishishita, Hans Krüger, Mikhail Lemarenko, •Piotr Rymaszewski, and Norbert Wermes — University of Bonn, Bonn, Germany
The LHC High Luminosity upgrade will greatly change the environment in which the particle detectors are going to operate, in particular for the pixel detector electronics being closest to the interaction point. The increased hit rate will require faster and more complex circuitry with very high requirements on the radiation hardness. Due to high complexity of the task R&D efforts are starting now in order to meet specifications set by High Luminosity upgrade. Our group is participating in one of such collaborations (RD53), which goal is to design an upgrade for a new pixel chip in an advanced 65nm CMOS technology. In this presentation the motivation and benefits of using this new, very deep-submicron technology will be shown together with a comparison with older technologies (130nm, 250nm). Some of the prototype circuits designed in our group will be presented along with performance measurements results.
