Search for lepton flavour violation in τ decays at the LHCb experiment — •Laura Gavardi and Johannes Albrecht — Experimentelle Physik 5, TU Dortmund
Decays violating the charged lepton flavour number are allowed in the Standard Model only through neutrino oscillations, with branching fractions suppressed to unmeasurable levels. Any observation of such transitions would unambiguously indicate the existence of phenomena beyond the Standard Model.
The search for the charged lepton flavour violating decay τ− → µ+ µ− µ− is performed by the LHCb Collaboration. It is motivated by the large cross section for τ production at LHCb and by the excellent muon identification provided by the detector.
The rare nature of such a decay makes the discrimination between signal and background fundamental for the analysis. Geometrical properties of the reconstructed τ decay play an important role in background rejection. One of the most important geometrical variables is the track isolation, which is a measure for the number of background tracks that form vertexes with the signal candidate tracks. In this talk the τ− → µ+ µ− µ− analysis will be presented, focusing on the measurement of the signal isolation.
