The Future of nuclear disarmament: Panel Discussion with Thomas Shea, Laura Grego and Götz Neuneck — •Matthias Englert — Facilitator

After the annexation of Crimea and the fighting in Eastern Ukraine the relations between the United States Western Europe and Russia are at a low level blocking any progress in the field of nuclear disarmament and arms control. But the crisis started much earlier when the reset between Russia and the United States failed due to unsolved key issues such as ballistic missile defense, the withdrawal for tactical weapons and incapability to find a solution for European Security. There is a real danger that some elements of the Cold war reemerge such as new nuclear weapon deployments which would also destroy the INF-Treaty. The upcoming NPT Review Conference faces key challenges such as the future paths to a world free of nuclear weapons. The panel consisting of scientists from the US, Russia and Europe will discuss the key challenges and ways out of the deadlock such as confidence building measures or the proposals by the humanitarian movement of the impact of nuclear weapons.
