Growth and Modification of single-crystalline VO2 Nanostructures — •Alexander Tille, Tim Barth, Jura Rensberg, and Carsten Ronning — Institut für Festkörperphysik, Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, Max-Wien-Platz 1, 07743 Jena, Germany
Unstrained single-crystalline Vanadium dioxide (VO2) nanostructures show an extremely sharp metal-insulator phase transition (MIT) at a critical temperature of 68 ∘C. Phase pure VO2 has a narrow existence region in the V-O-phase diagram, thus mixed vanadium oxides (VOx) are easily obtained by thermal annealing of VO2 in either reducing or oxidizing environment. In this work free-standing, single-crystalline VO2 nanowires were grown on SiO2 substrates using an evaporation method. After transfer to a clean insulating substrate, NWs were annealed up to 600 ∘C in both ambient atmosphere and high vacuum. In both cases, temperature dependent electrical measurements show a shift of the critical temperature to lower values. Furthermore, temperature dependent Raman spectroscopy reveals a correlation between this shift and the structural properties of the NWs. Thus, we gained a deeper insight in the relationship between the structure and the critical temperature of the MIT.
