Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) is a commonly used absorber material in thin film photovoltaics. However, the high costs of raw materials constitute a challenge for industrial production, such that there is a demand for alternative, more efficient cell designs. In demonstration experiments, CIGS micro-concentrator cells have in principle been shown to increase the efficiency while saving source material. A bottom-up process for the preparation of ordered arrays of isolated micro-absorbers is being developed based on arranging precursor islands on a laser patterned substrate.
