In the emerging fields of spintronics and spin caloritronics recently discovered phenomena such as the spin Hall effect, the spin Hall magnetoresistance and the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (LSSE), enable the generation, manipulation and detection of spin polarized currents. Further, the spin Nernst effect and the spin Nernst magnetothermopower (SMTP) are expected to be reported soon. Pt has been employed quite often for generating and detecting a pure spin current, if adjacent to a magnetic insulator, although the question of proximity effects has to be taken into account [1].
In this project we investigate the separation of the LSSE and additional magnetothermopower effects in Pt/YIG bilayers. Therefore, a temperature gradient was generated by heating the electric contacts [2] or by applying a charge current along the Pt stripe. In magnetic field rotation measurements we detect several voltage contributions which can be attributed to the LSSE and to additional magnetothermopower effects. We separate the contributions and discuss the probable amount of classical anisotropic magnetothermopower effects and of the new SMTP.
