High Resolution Imaging of Spin Current-driven Magnetization Manipulation in Nanoscale Structures using SEMPA — •Pascal Krautscheid, Robert M. Reeve, and Mathias Kläui — Institut für Physik, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität, 55128 Mainz
For proposed spintronic devices such as memory, logic and sensors a control over the static spin configuration and an ability to understand and manipulate the dynamics is required. The initial configuration, such as the domain wall spin structure can be tailored through the geometry. Manipulating the magnetic state of a system including the domain wall spin configuration can subsequently be achieved by utilizing the electron spin degree of freedom. The interaction between a spin current and the magnetic moments of a system is governed by an adiabatic and a non-adiabatic spin torque and can be described by the implicit Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation [1]. In order to understand the origin of the non-adiabatic torque and the dependence on damping we study a magnetic vortex state within permalloy-disks with different rare earth doping levels [2] and image the vortex core displacement on current injection [3]. An alternative spin current source is the spin-hall effect which can also be employed for magnetization manipulation which we study in wires of materials with different spin-hall angles. We use a scanning electron microscope with polarization analysis, which offers the necessary high-resolution magnetic imaging. [1] A. Thiaville et al., Europhys. Lett. 69, 990 (2005).[3] B.
