Production and deposition of mass-selected iron clusters on MoS2 investigated with AFM — •Matthias Bohlen, Christoph Schröder, Dominik Wolter, and Heinz Hövel — Fakultät Physik/DELTA, Technische Universität Dortmund, 44221 Dortmund, Germany
In order to deposit iron clusters on various surfaces, we used a magnetron-sputter gas aggregation cluster source [1] and a semi-continuous time-of-flight mass selector [2]. For iron clusters the simulation of suitable target geometry was important. We deposited Fe2000 ± 36 clusters with different coverages, from 1 % to 20 % of a cluster-monolayer, on different samples. Using a cleaved surface of a MoS2 crystal, atomically flat on microscopic areas but providing some bonding of the clusters, we were able to use atomic force microscopy (AFM) and verify a narrow cluster height distribution. The change of the cluster size due to contact with air is discussed.
