On-surface synthesis with terminal alkynes: towards novel functional nanomaterials — •Florian Klappenberger — Technische Universität München, Physik Department E20

The bottom-up construction of one- (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) molecular nanoarchitectures under ultra-high vacuum conditions is reported with focus on the steps essential for the atom-precise fabrication of covalent hydrocarbon nanomaterials. A comprehensive understanding is obtained by the STM+XS approach[1] combining LT-scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and X-ray spectroscopy (XS) with density functional theory investigations and all-atom molecular dynamic simulations allowing to precisely characterize the obtained nanostructures and unraveling the underlying formation mechanisms. More specifically, here, we shine light on the on-surface chemistry of terminal alkyne precursors including their self-assembly[2,3] and coupling behavior[4,5] on noble metal surfaces, identify side reaction[6], highlight the significant differences to more reactive substrates[7] and point out templating mechanisms allowing to control the reaction and fabricate regular 1D extended graphdiyne nanowires[8].
