Floating surface potential of spherical dust grains in magnetized plasmas — •Dennie Lange and Rainer Grauer — Institut für Theoretische Physik I, Ruhr-Universität Bochum

The study of the charging of objects embedded in a plasma - the so called dust grains - is a classic problem of plasma physics. Due to the larger mobility of electrons dust grains are typically charged negatively. In this work the floating equilibrium surface potential of spherical dust grains of different radiuses in magnetized plasma environment and the potential structure of the surrounding plasma is investigated with PIC simulations. The magnetized plasma is created by overlapping the simulation-box with a homogeneous and constant magnetic field. Several magnetic field strengths with corresponding electron/ion gyration radiuses both greater and smaller as the grain radiuses and/or the debye-length are being studied. The results are compared to the OML theory and the transition between weak and full magnetized plasma is considered and modelled.
