Dust density waves in a magnetized complex plasma — •Hanno Kählert — Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, ITAP
Dust density waves excited by streaming ions are a well-known phenomenon in complex plasmas and have been investigated in detail both experimentally and theoretically. With the superconducting magnets that are now available, it should be possible to study these waves in a regime where the ions are strongly magnetized. Theoretical calculations have already shown that strong magnetization may suppress the instability [1]. Based on an improved dielectric function, which accounts for deviations of the ion distribution function from a shifted Maxwellian, the effect of ion magnetization on the propagation of dust density waves is further explored. In the unmagnetized limit, comparisons with results using a shifted Maxwellian [2] are presented.
