PEGASUS: Building an intense spin-polarized electron gun - First test runs — Michael Lestinsky1, •Daniel Schury1,2, Siegbert Hagmann1, Christophor Koshuharov1, and Thomas Stoehlker1,3 — 1GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH, D-64291 Darmstadt — 2Institut für Atom- und Molekühlphysik, Universität Giessen, D-35392 Giessen — 3Helmholtzinstitut Jena, Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, D-07743 Jena
The PEGASUS project aims at building an intense and portable spin-polarized electron gun for experiments in crossed beams arrangements at various ion beam facilities. The electron beam will cover energies between 1 and 10 keV at electron currents up to 100 µA. As source material we will utilize laser-induced electron emission from GaAs photocathodes which will be prepared in a state of negative electron affinity. With a set of electrostatic lenses and benders, the electrons will be transported to the interaction zone and Wien-filters will be used for controlling the spin orientation.
Results from first test runs will be presented and foreseen experiments discussed.
