We study structural defects (kinks) which are formed during the transition from a laser cooled cloud of Mg-Ions to a Coulomb crystal [1].
Via tuning the ratio of the trapping frequencies we are able to shape the kink’s structure [2].
Ion crystals with such structural defects feature a gapped mode in the spectrum of phonons.
Since the gap separation of the latter is nearly independent of the crystal size, this approach could be particularly useful for producing entanglement and studying system-environment interactions in large, two- and possibly three-dimensional systems[3].
We discuss first concepts on the experimental realisation of subdoppler cooling based on two photon transitions in combination with topological defects.
