Single trapped, laser cooled Ba+ and Ra+ ions are ideally suited for high precision measurements of the weak mixing angle at low energy; in addition, the same experimental setup can be used to build an atomic clock with a fractional frequency uncertainty of 10−18. Both applications require powerful diagnostics of trap dynamics and percent level accuracy in atomic theory. Here the lifetime of the metastable 5d2D5/2 level of Ba+ provides a sensitive diagnostic for perturbations of the ion. Using quantum jump spectroscopy of a single trapped ion, a lifetime of 26(2) s was determined, correcting for collisions with residual gas. Furthermore, we have determined the 6s2S1/2−6d2P1/2 and 6s2P1/2−5d2D3/2 transition frequencies to MHz accuracy using Raman spectroscopy referenced to an optical frequency comb. This constitutes an improvement in the absolute accuracy of some 2 orders of magnitude.
