Understanding the production and properties of top quarks is fundamental for testing the quality of the Standard Model (SM) and measuring the Higgs-boson properties. Moreover, the top quark plays an important role in searching for new physics beyond the SM (BSM), and it is a major source of background for many BSM searches. Therefore, it will be crucial to measure the top-quark pair (tt) production cross section at the upcoming Run II of the LHC, where proton-proton collisions will occur at an unprecedented centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. In this talk we present first studies towards an early measurement of the tt production cross section at 13 TeV with the CMS experiment using final states with two leptons.
