Statistical methods used in the search for singly produced vector-like quarks in ATLAS — •Anjishnu Bandyopadhyay, Ian C. Brock, Sebastian Mergemleyer, and Rui Zhang for the ATLAS collaboration — Universität Bonn, Bonn, Germany
Vector-like quarks are a probe into Beyond the Standard Model physics as they are predicted by many effective field theory models. A search for two vector-like quarks, b* and B′, both decaying into a W boson and a top quark is being conducted at ATLAS. The statistical methods used in this analysis are presented.
A likelihood fit is done where we define the likelihood and compute its value using RooStats. The fit is done using a Bayesian approach implemented by the Bayesian Analysis Toolkit. The presence of both dilepton and lepton+jets channel and also many control regions made the analysis quite challenging. Upper limits set on b*/B′ production cross sections times branching fraction by fitting binned templates to distributions obtained using ATLAS data collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV are presented.
