Measurement of the τ polarization in the Z → τlep τhad decay at the ATLAS detector — Philip Bechtle, Klaus Desch, •Lara Schildgen, and Peter Wagner for the ATLAS collaboration — University of Bonn
This presentation summarizes the status of the first measurement of the τ lepton polarization in Z boson decays at the ATLAS detector at CERN. The reconstruction of the individual decay products of hadronically decaying τ leptons is one of the new developments of the event reconstruction at ATLAS for Run II of the LHC. It will offer an improved reconstruction precision and ultimately access to observables that allow for a Higgs CP measurement in the di-tau final state. One of the prerequisites is the understanding of the τ polarization reconstruction.
The analysis focuses on the decay process Z → τlep τhad in which one τ lepton decays leptonically while the other one decays hadronically. The polarization of the hadronically decaying τ lepton is estimated from the energy asymmetry of the charged and neutral decay products.
The presented analysis is based on data collected with the ATLAS detector in 2012 at a center of mass energy of √s = 8 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb−1. The presentation emphasizes the understanding of polarization-sensitive observables using sideband and control distributions from data.
