Particle Identification with a Time-of-Flight Spectrometer for the Measurement of Nuclear Cross Sections for Particle Therapy — •Ronja Lewke, Max Emde, Britta Grimm, Carsten Hinz, and Achim Stahl — Physics Institute III B, RWTH Aachen University, Aachen, Germany
In cancer treatment with ions, nuclear reactions occur in the tissue of the patient. Their cross sections are insufficiently known. To measure them, reactions of protons and carbon ions are investigated with a time-of-flight spectrometer. The kinetic energy of the reaction products, their time-of-flight and specific energy loss in matter are measured with scintillation detectors. With our setup, the mass and the charge of the fragments are determined and the primary reaction is completely reconstructed.
In this talk, the results of a test series with a carbon beam at the Heidelberg Ion-Beam Therapy Center are presented. The comparison of the measured data to Geant4 simulations shows good agreement. It is demonstrated that the particle identification is possible with this setup.
