Upgrade of a Time-of-Flight Spectrometer for Measurements of Nuclear Cross Sections in Particle Therapy — •Max Emde, Britta Grimm, Carsten Hinz, Florian Lenz, Ronja Lewke, and Achim Stahl — Physics Institute III B, RWTH Aachen University, Aachen, Germany
For research and optimisation in cancer therapy with ion beams cross sections of the occurring nuclear reactions are needed. We want to measure these cross sections using a time-of-flight spectrometer in a fixed-target experiment with a carbon-ion beam on a polyethylene target. The final-state particles are identified by their mass and charge numbers which are inferred from their time of flight, kinetic energy and energy loss in matter. The particle identification was demonstrated with the present prototype for single particles. Now, new detectors are built with improved acceptance and resolution in order to measure all ions of the final state. The new detectors consist of a tracker made from fast plastic scintillator bars read out with silicon photomultipliers for time and energy-loss measurement and a BGO calorimeter read out with PIN diodes.
