Manganites show a number of exotic phenomena such as charge- and obital-ordering, the formation of striped phases, colossal magnetoresistance, and metal-to-insulator transitions. Here we report on nature of a photoinduced metal-to insulator transition in the manganite Pr1−xCaxMnO3 (PCMO) induced by the coherent excitation of a cubic perovskite structure vibration as revealed by ultrafast measurements of the optical conductivity in the terahertz range. The ultrafast coherent modulation of the Mn-O bond distance modulates the electronic overlap, thereby causing a bandgap collapse leading to substantial changes in the low frequency optical conductivity. The aim of this research is to clarify the coupling mechanism between the structural and the electronic degrees of freedom in this vibrationally-induced phase transition.
