In the search for multiferroic materials with ferromagnetic and ferroelectric order in a single phase, the A2BBO6 double perovskites hold the potential for room-temperature functionality. The fabrication challenge with these multi-cation complex oxides lies in the precise control of oxidation states of the elements and achieving a high degree of B-site chemical order. Based on recent theoretical investigations to identify potential ferromagnetic insulators among 3d-5d double perovskites, the compound Bi2MnReO6 was predicted to have magnetic ordering temperatures well above 300 K. We report on the fabrication of epitaxial thin films of the analogous novel Mn-Re based compounds on single crystal SrTiO3 (001) substrates, using pulsed laser deposition. Given the specific configuration of the outer electronic shells and the close to 150∘ Mn-O-Re bond angle, the magnetic moments on Mn and Re are expected to be coupled via superexchange in a ferrimagnetic state. Detailed structural investigations were performed by X-ray diffraction and the magnetic properties were studied by SQUID magnetometry.
