The class of Heusler compounds exhibits a plethora of remarkable properties. Recently, special interest arised in magnetocaloric properties found in selected Heusler compounds. The magnetocaloric effect may be related to a metamagnetic transition which is understood to evolve as a result of the interplay between co-existing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. The Fe-Mn-Si system is promising to observe this effect, due to the magnetism of the parent compounds, which exhibit both ferromagnetism (Fe2MnSi) and antiferromagnetism (Mn3Si).
A substitution series between the two materials was prepared by arc-melting stoichiometric amounts of the respective elements. Samples were characterized as-cast as well as after an additional annealing step at 900 ∘C for 3 days followed by quenching in water.
Consequently, the effect of substitution on the magnetic behavior in this system is discussed and set in context to the microstructure and phase evolution of the series.
