We present a novel approach for measuring the energy distribution of laser-accelerated ion bunches behind energy selective transport elements. The method relies on detecting the acoustic wave launched by the nearly instantaneous dose deposition in a water phantom, by a ultrasonic submersible pressure transducer. Contrary to the traditional ways of ion energy detection, the flight time measurement of acoustic waves successfully separates the laser generated EMP(electric magnetic pulse) signal from the acoustic signal. First experiments indicate excellent single-bunch functionality for focused protons with kinetic energies between 7 and 10 MeV.
