We present a spectroscopic study on atomically thin MoS2 exposed to helium ions. Distinct changes of the first-order Raman bands, additional defect luminescence and strong modification of the intrinsic valley spin relaxation properties are observed, shedding light on the effect of disorder on the optical properties and valley spin relaxation mechanisms. Moreover, our observations are in good qualitative agreement with Density Functional Theory calculations.
