Spin-orbit coupling effects on bulk and surface states in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy — •Hernieta Volfova — LMU München, Germany

The focus of the master thesis was on comprehensive theoretical study of novel class of materials as hot candidates in field of spintronics. These systems are also known as multiferroic Rashba semiconductor (MUFERS), in which ferroelectricity meets the ferromagnetic order. The master thesis was motivated by spin probing experiments originating from Krempaský et al. [1,2] The theoretical calculations have clarified origin, character and spin character of electronic states and enabled to disentangle the Rashba bulk states from surface effects. The doping of GeTe with ferromagnetic Mn enables the coexistence of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric order in one system. The spin helicity can be manipulated by an application of magnetic as well as electric fields or even by combination of boths. Thus, this family of these materials may introduce a fundamental entity for reprogrammable logic and/or non-volatile memory applications. [2]
