Determination of the orientation of Self-Assembled-Monolayers on Indium-Tin-Oxide by means of Infrared spectroscopy — •Lisa Tischer, Julia Rittich, Sebastian Jung, and Matthias Wuttig — I. Institute of Physics (IA), RWTH Aachen University, Germany
In recent years, organic devices such as organic solar cells or organic light emitting diodes (OLED) have gained considerable interest due to their high flexibility and efficiency. The improvement of device performance is of great interest and can be achieved by optimization of the electrode-semiconductor interface. In previous work it has been shown that the application of self-assembled monolayers (SAM) onto the metal can lead to a work function alignment and thus to the reduction of ohmic losses [1,2]. To be able to tailor the work function, a fundamental knowledge of the SAM ordering is the most important requirement.
In this work, we develop a route to determine the tilt angle of 4-(Dimethylamino)benzoic acid (4DMABA) SAMs on Indium Tin Oxide (ITO). For this purpose, 4DMABA layers of different thicknesses are deposited onto the substrate. The geometric arrangement of the molecule depends on the layer thickness and is analysed using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Attenuated Total Reflection (ATR). This route provides a basis to understand molecular arrangement of SAMs on ITO electrodes.
