The molecular donor tetraphenyldibenzoperianthene (DBP) exhibits coverage-dependent superstructures on Au(111). At submonolayer coverages the molecules align parallel to each other. They arrange in row-like structures, which exhibit a nearly rectangular primitive unit cell. The closed molecular monolayer is characterized by a herringbone-type DBP arrangement spanned by an almost square unit cell containing two molecules. Both superstuctures simultaneously occur in a narrow coverage range close to completion of the molecular monolayer. Structural properties were consistently probed in real and reciprocal space by scanning tunnelling microscopy and low-energy electron diffraction, respectively.
