Breathers in nonlinear metamaterials with amplification and absorption — •Sascha Böhrkircher, Sebastian Erfort, Holger Cartarius, and Günter Wunner — 1. Institut für Theoretische Physik, Universität Stuttgart, 70550 Stuttgart, Germany
PT-symmetry originates from non-Hermitian quantum mechanics in the presence of gain and loss, and was experimentally proven in analogous optical systems. Recently, PT-symmetry was realized in metamaterials. As examinations have shown, a PT-symmetric nonlinear dimer chain composed of split-ring resonators can form discrete breather oscillations [1]. Previous works have been limited to one-dimensional systems. In our work we extend the one-dimensional dimer chain to a two-dimensional dimer surface and investigate the breather oscillations of this system starting from the one-dimensional solution. We study the behaviour of these breather oscillations by adiabatically increasing the coupling parameters.
