The ability to identify jets with b-hadrons is essential for many physics analyses at the LHC. In ATLAS there are several algorithms available to tag jets induced by b-hadrons. The secondary vertex finding algorithm uses the information of the secondary decay vertex of the b-hadron. As b-hadrons have a sufficiently long lifetime, the distance to the primary vertex can be resolved in the detector. The secondary vertex finder is able to reconstruct one or more secondary vertices in a jet, depending on the physics problem.
This talk will describe the algorithm and the information that can be exploited from reconstructing secondary vertices. This information is fed to the higher-level b-tagging algorithms in ATLAS. The major updates of the algorithm, that lead to an improved performance are shown and compared to the LHC Run 1.
