Surface Radio Air-Shower Detection in IceCube-Gen2 — •Aswathi Balagopal V., Agnieszka Lesczcynska, Andreas Haungs, and Thomas Huber for the IceCube collaboration — Karlsruher Institut für Technologie
IceCube-Gen2 is the planned extension of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, at the South Pole. IceTop, the existing surface veto and air shower array consists of 81 stations of Cherenkov tanks that detect the incoming cosmic-ray air showers. Combining these particle detectors with radio detectors will give more information about cosmic-ray air showers. It is well known that radio detection of air showers helps in the reconstruction of Xmax and the energy of the shower with a reasonable accuracy and can thereby provide a more efficient reconstruction. Using a radio extension at the South Pole can also help in the detection of rare events like photons approaching the Earth from the galactic center. The Galactic center is visible from the South Pole throughout the year, at an inclination of around 70 degrees. High energy gammas, upon entering the Earth produce inclined air showers. Since radio emission of inclined showers leaves a huge footprint on the ground, detection of such events using radio technique can be possible. An overview of the ongoing studies of radio detection of inclined air showers from gammas of energy around 10 PeV will be reported.
