Construction and performance of the Scintillator Surface Detectors for the Upgrade of the Pierre Auger Observatory — •Alexander Streich, Radomir Smida, Darko Veberic, and Ralph Engel for the Pierre Auger collaboration — Karlsruher Institut für Technologie, Deutschland
Since the beginning of measurements of the Pierre Auger Observatory in 2001, the determination of the mass composition and the analysis of the flux suppression of ultra-high energy cosmic rays at the far end are two major science topics of the Pierre Auger Collaboration. To distinguish the best fitting model describing the energy spectrum of cosmic rays, several parts of the Observatory will be upgraded in the following two years. One major part of this upgrade is the installation of scintillator detectors on top of each of the 1660 water-Cherenkov tanks of the surface detector. With a different response to the muonic and the electromagnetic particles when compared to the existing detectors these Scintillator Surface Detectors provide an improved determination of the mass and type of cosmic rays. In this presentation we show the construction and discuss the performance of the first scintillator detectors built for the Engineering Array at the KIT.
