Measuring the optical properties of the IceCube drill holes — •Martin Rongen for the IceCube collaboration — III. Physikalisches Institut, RWTH Aachen
IceCube instruments about 1 km3 of deep ice below the South Pole with 5160 digital optical modules (DOMs) to register the Cherenkov light of charged particles. As the detector operates in a natural medium, a good understanding of its optical properties is crucial to the understanding of systematic uncertainties at analysis level. While the optical properties of the natural ice in-between drill holes are well understood, the properties of the refrozen drill holes still pose a challenge. By comparing the detected light pattern of photons emitted from calibration LEDs, situated in each DOM, to an extensive set of photon propagation simulations, the optical properties of the drill holes can be constrained. The method as well as the derived ice model modifications are presented and compared to previous investigations.
