Graphene has been a popular candidate for tribological applications in the past decade. Considering the widespread application of carbon as solid lubricant in various applications, the potential of graphene in this field is irrefutable despite many fundamental problems. Coating the surfaces of interest with a reliable graphene film for the reduction of friction and wear is one of the most clear and formidable of them. In this work single and few layer graphene were grown on copper foils by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and transferred onto steel samples. Friction force microscopy (FFM) was used to investigate the effect of these graphene films on the tribological properties of steel surfaces. Our results indicate that graphene helps the reduction of the friction coefficient of steel surface when compared to bare surface under different load forces and sliding speeds. In this presentation the temporal evolution of the graphene based tribological films will also be discussed.
