The topology of interactions in networks of coupled dynamical units funda- mentally underlies their function. Yet, reconstructing the network connectivity from the collective dynamics often requires access to its complete continuous-time dynamics, which is often not experimentally accessible. By borrowing ideas from continuous dynamical systems, we propose a theory for revealing structural connections in networked systems solely from discrete events in time. Representing the patterns of recurrent event timings in an event space spanned by inter- and cross-event intervals, we reveal the structural interactions among all units. For illustration, we reveal the synaptic connectivity of different models of spiking neural networks from spike trains alone without assuming any particular dynamical model. Furthermore, our theory predicts the presence or absence of synapses between any pair of neurons as well as whether the coupling acts in an inhibiting or activating (excitatory) fashion.
