Laser-assisted local magnetization switching across the spin reorientation transition in DyCo5 antidots — •Jaime Sánchez-Barriga, Chen Luo, Sergio Valencia, and Florin Radu — Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie, Elektronenspeicherring BESSY II, Albert-Einstein-Str. 15, 12489 Berlin, Germany
The miniaturization required to achieve ultrahigh areal bit densities leads to new fundamental challenges in both growth of magnetic nanostructures and control of magnetic properties of ferrimagnets in low dimensions. Using photoelectron emission microscopy in combination with x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, we demonstrate the use of DyCo5 ferrimagnetic antidot arrays for heat-assisted magnetic recording. This is achieved by exploiting the reorientation of the magnetic anisotropy which occurs just above room temperature, and by using trains of laser pulses down to a single-photon shot. This allows us to drive the system into a fully controllable final magnetic state of nanoscale bits. We further characterize the efficiency of the process as a function of laser fluence, and find that heat accumulation is the driving mechanism responsible for the switching.
