The creation and current driven motion of magnetic skyrmions at room temperature was recently observed [1], but the key formation mechanisms are poorly understood. Here we show that in thin films pulsed currents can drive morphological phase transitions. Using high-resolution x-ray microscopy, we image the evolution of the spin texture with temperature and magnetic field, and demonstrate that transient Joule heating can drive the system across the stripe-skyrmion phase boundary.
