A better microscopic understanding of the fundamental electronic interactions between low-pressure plasmas and solid surfaces is presently hindered by the lack of experimental techniques that can probe both sides of the plasma interface on the relevant length and time scales: the electron- and ion-depleted space-charge region in front of the surface, i.e., the plasma sheath, as well as the electron accumulation layer in the surface region of the solid. Here, we show how to fill this void by combining synchrotron-based gas-phase and surface x-ray absorption spectroscopy into a novel experimental technique that provides direct spectroscopic information on the complete interface between low-pressure plasmas and solid surfaces. First in situ and in operando near edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy results on the plasma interface are presented for an Al2O3 substrate in contact with argon and neon plasmas.
