The influence of electrostatic interaction on lateral manipulation of single iron atoms using tilted CO and metal tips in combined STM/AFM at low temperatures — •Julian Berwanger, Ferdinand Huber, and Franz J. Giessibl — University of Regensburg, 93040 Regensburg, Germany
The functionalization of scanning probe microscope tips with a CO molecule -introduced by Bartels et al. [1] for STM and by Gross et al. [2] for AFM - is widely used today due to their atomic resolution capability on molecules, metallic clusters and other sample systems [2-4]. The exact imaging mechanism and the influence of bending effects of the CO tip on experimental data was studied extensively [5-8]. Nonetheless, a study which investigates the stability of CO tips with respect to lateral manipulation experiments is missing. We perform lateral manipulation of single atoms with metal and CO tips and find that tilted tips yield an asymmetry in the lateral force field, while the asymmetry is inverted by using CO tips with respect to tilted metal tips. Furthermore we propose, that the electrostatic interaction is responsible for this inversion of the asymmetry of the lateral force field.
