One of the greatest problems in developing novel public transportation systems is the enormous dynamic range of possible demands. It therefore appears imperative to come up with schemes efficiently coupling different `modes' of service which feature different benefits. We study a bi-modal coupled system of ride-sharing minibuses and standard line services (like tram) in a mean-field setting. Criteria are developed for jointly optimizing the bi-modal operation, and pertinent scaling relations are derived.
