Disentangling the photodissociation pathways of small lead clusters by time-resolved monitoring of their delayed decays: The case of Pb31+ — •Markus Wolfram, Stephan König, Steffi Bandelow, Paul Fischer, Alexander Jankowski, Gerrit Marx, and Lutz Schweikhard — Ernst-Moritz-Arndt Universität, Greifswald, Deutschland
Lead clusters Pbn(+/−) in the size range between about n = 15 and 40 have recently shown to exhibit complex dissociation spectra due to sequential and competing decays [1]. In order to disentangle the pathways, the exemplary Pb31+ clusters have been stored and size selected in a Penning trap at the ClusterTrap setup [2] and irradiated by nanosecond laser pulses.
We present time-resolved measurements of the decay behavior at time scales from several tens of microseconds to several hundreds of milliseconds. The study results in strong evidence that Pb31+ decays not only by neutral monomer evaporation but also by neutral heptamer breaking off [3].
