International Science Teacher Trainings — •Sönke Graf and Manuela Welzel-Breuer — Pädagogische Hochschule Heidelberg
In-service Science Teacher Trainings next to scientific publications are one of the main interfaces between new findings in science and educational science into practice. Unfortunately this interface is subject to more and more practical limitations that need to be addressed. Problems that teacher trainings increasingly are facing include: Scarcity of teacher training time available. Due to increasing workloads and fields of responsibility, teachers usually tend to attend shorter training showing problems of inducing true behavioral change on the side of the teachers. The work at hand takes a close look at the informal interactions of science teachers during a Comenius related international science teacher training on the use of computer aided teaching material CAT and compares it to selected TALIS (Teacher and Learning International Survey) data and current research on self-determination theory, sociometric network analysis and research on group dynamic processes in order to construct data-based hypotheses on what additional design choices might be implemented during international science teacher trainings. Findings give an exemplary view on what conversation topics occurred in what occasions and allow for new hypotheses on when profession related topics might be successfully introduced. Also the findings indicate that the informal space may be designed to foster sustainable group formation that outlast the duration of the science teacher training itself and thus might help to sustainably promote behavioral change in classroom under certain conditions.
