Undergraduate experiments: Single photon optics — •Ruediger Scholz1 and Kim Alessandro Weber2 — 1Institut für Quantenoptik; Leibniz Universitaet Hannover — 2Institut für Didaktik der Mathematik und Physik; Leibniz Universitaet Hannover
In light of the vocational relevance of the bachelor degree there is a noticable disproportion: While wave optics experiments are absolute standard in undergraduate labs the explicite observation of the quantum nature of light seems to be still challengin today. Here we present a series of experiments from classical optics to real quantum optics opening the door to a contemporary understanding of optical physics. The experiments are governed by the analysis of interferometry and coincidence counting, determining the value of the second order correlation function. Important parts of the analysis focus on noise measurements and the influence of coincidence schemes on the uncertainty of the measurements.
