The hybrid IT infrastructure for high performance computing of the future — Ingolf Wittmann1, Markus Braun2, Michael Marthaler3, Federico Carminati4, Christian Ospelkaus5, and Tommaso Calarco6 — 1IBM — 2JoS-Quantum — 3HQS Quantum Simulations — 4CERN — 5IQO, Uni Hannover and PTB — 6FZ Juelich
What is the future of high-performance computing (hpc)? Different trends may converge into hybrid and modular architectures, combining classical processor bound hpc, in-memory-computing, GPU's and FPGA's, neuromorphic chips with enhanced machine learning capabilities, a quantum systems and novel types of algorithms and programming beyond von Neuman architectures. The mix may depend on specific requirements in each field of applied hpc. The discussion will try to shed light on differences, challenges and benefits of approaches currently under development in the field.
