We study many body chaos in (2+1)D relativistic scalar field theory at high temperatures in the classical statistical approximation. We find the Lyapunov exponent to increase linearly with temperature in the quantum critical regime, and to approach the non-interacting limit algebraically in terms of a fluctuation parameter. Chaos spreads ballistically even at the phase transition, where the butterfly velocity is maximal. Run-to-run fluctuations exhibit a self-similar behaviour in accordance with the (1+1)D KPZ universality class. This work furthens the understanding of the relation between quantum and classical many body chaos and our method can be straightforwardly applied to other field theories dominated by classical modes.
