Amorphous materials are ubiquitous in todays society. However, many properties of amorphous media are still not understood, and pose a challenge to theoretical and experimental methods. Here, we analyze the response of amorphous carbon to an intense ultrafast laser pulse using ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations and compare our results to recent XAS experiments performed at the EIS-TIMEX and Fermi beamlines. In particular, we observe in our simulations s ignificant changes in the electronic density of states upon laser excitation. These changes are consistent with the time-evolution of the absoprtion spectrum in experiments. We demonstrate that the changes of the electronic density of states are caused by a non-thermal melting of the system. This can be particularly observed in the time-evolution of the radial distribution function and the mean square displacements.
