Over the last few years, ultracold strontium atoms have become a platform for realizing optical atomic clocks, atom interferometers, and quantum simulators. All such experiments require producing cold and dense strontium samples from an atomic beam at high duty cycles and with large atom numbers to increase their precision. Here, we improve on a recently demonstrated laser cooling method (sawtooth-wave adiabatic passage, SWAP) to dramatically decrease the preparation time, increase the final atom number, and improve the robustness of our sample preparation. By combining SWAP cooling with narrow-line magneto-optical trapping, we create samples at microkelvin temperatures for both bosonic (Sr-88) and fermionic (Sr-87) strontium isotopes. Our preparation step is optimized for fast cooling and large atom number and combines the advantages of previously demonstrated sample preparation methods for both precision measurements (high duty cycle) and quantum simulation (large atom number).
